Call Of Duty 4The Master of all Online First Person ShootersSep 18, 2008 Phillip Taylor Hart
With the release of Call of Duty 5 fast approaching, a look back at the game that makes this franchise so amazing is worth a few paragraphs.
Call of Duty 4 is hands down the best online first person shooter out there. There are few games which can come close to the success and popularity of this game. Even comparing it to such iconic games as Quake, there is still a large area of difference between the two. Namely the stronger emphasis on teamplay, allowing for the use of more in-depth strategy and the very detailed ranking/equipment unlock feature. Both of these points demand further discussion. Team Based Play in Call of Duty 4 vs QuakeCall of Duty 4 takes team based play to the next level. There are, of course, map types where play is reduced to 'everyone versus everyone else', but there are more setups that favor, and in most cases require, team based play. A perfect example of this are the Search and Destroy maps. Teams are made up of up to six players, one team has a bomb to plant, and the other team must either kill the enemy team before the bomb is planted or defuse the bomb before it detonates. Team strategy is key to this; trying to go it solo will result in a quick and easy death. There are also Teamdeath matches where its team versus team, where once again a successful strategy is key to keeping the score up. The addition of wireless headset capabilities for the game makes quick planning and action very possible. The Call of Duty Ranking SystemThe lowly private. The starting point for most great soliders of war. This is also true for soldiers in Call of Duty 4. Starting at this rank, the player has limited weapon setup capabilites and only a few weapon classes to choose from. But after a few successful kills over multiple rounds more weapons and equipment begin to open up allowing for very interesting setups. Depending on the map, and if really advanced, a player may choose to go in as sniper support with claymores and some extra frag gernades or spawn up with two shotguns for some serious up close damage. The options are varied as the higher ranks are obtained adding new dimensions to the game and helping to keep things fresh. Add to this what is called the "prestige levels", where players who reach the top rank of 5 Star General may choose to start back at private with a special emblem next to their name, and the fun of building up rank is there again. Call of Duty: The Future of FourThe first thing to take into account when judging a first person shooter is its replay value. This is what makes or breaks it for this style of game. As the action taking place can in some sense be deemed repetitive it is important for the game to stay interesting. The designers of Call of Duty 4 certainly took this into account when building the game. With the aforementioned team based play and the ranking system CoD 4 is a giant to be reckoned with. The release of Call of Duty 5: World at War will be an interesting thing to take note of, for with the huge success of the previous titile, it certainly has its work cut out for it.
