Unique Weapons for Crazy Solutions Scribblenauts Nintendo DS / DSi

Oct 18, 2009 Bradley Kairis

Scribblenauts offers open-ended gameplay with around 20,000 total words. Read this strategy guide for word lists on some of the weapons available in Scribblenauts.

Scribblenauts offers truly unique, open-ended, "emergent gameplay" for the Nintendo DS Lite / DSi handheld gaming systems by developer 5th Cell. The main character Maxwell must solve puzzles by summoning objects, creatures, and people using the DS Stylus and writing the objects to make them spring to life. Write "Vampire" and a Vampire appears, write "Holy Water" and Maxwell can throw Holy Water at the Vampire to kill him.

In Scribblenauts, the objective and true fun-factor isn't about solving puzzles and winning the game, it's about doing so in as imaginative way as possible. Sure, a handful of useful objects can be used time and time again to solve many of the game's puzzles, but why not try some of the more imaginative objects below?

Read on for lists of unique weapons, both peaceful and destructive, for Scribblenauts on Nintendo DS / DSi.

Melee Weapons List

  • Chainsaw
  • Excalibur
  • Flame Sword
  • Halberd
  • Ice Pick
  • Laser Sword
  • Nunchucks
  • Scythe
  • Wooden Stake

Other weapons can be attached to either end of the Nunchucks, making for a more elaborate weapon of destruction. Obviously, the Wooden Stake works as a vampire-killer, but not too useful for anything more than that. Most of these weapons can also be used to either break ice and other obstacles or chop down trees.

The power varies, but in most cases, when fighting stronger foes, Melee weapons should be avoided entirely, as it places Maxwell in direct danger.

Projectile Weapons / Guns List

  • Assault Rifle
  • Bow
  • Crossbow
  • Handgun
  • Laser Pistol
  • Shotgun
  • Sniper Rifle

Projectile Weapons weapons offer death from afar. All guns and projectile weapons offer reliable means of enemy disposal, but the low ammo count can mean creating numerous weapons and reducing the total score.

Even though Tanks and Airplanes offer infinite ammo, sometimes they cannot fit in small, confined locations, making guns one of the best options for self-defense.

Throwing Weapons List

  • Boomerang
  • Garlic
  • Holy Water
  • Shuriken

Although throwing weapons can be used time and time again, offering a long-range option with virtually unlimited ammo, the power simply isn't high enough to be useful in most cases.

The boomerang does return once thrown, usually allowing it to strike multiple times in one throw. Holy Water and Garlic, naturally, work as anti-vampire weapons, and the Shuriken is simply for those ninja-wannabes out there.

Special Weapons List

Most of the Special Weapons allow level completion through peaceful means. Instead of killing enemies, trapping them in a block of ice or mind controlling them allows for a peaceful alternative.

  • Fan
  • Freeze Ray
  • Magic Wand
  • Medusa Head
  • Mind Control Device
  • Necronomicon
  • Shrink Ray
  • Tranquilizer Gun

"Fan" is actually a tool, but like many tools it can be used as a weapon. By placing a fan near an enemy, the fan can push an enemy into a body of water. Then, by dropping the fan in the water it creates a deadly electrical blast.

The Freeze Ray imprisons the target in a block of ice. It sounds more useful than it is, considering it oftentimes blocks the path. Alternatively, the Magic Wand turns an enemy into a frog, and the Medusa Head turns them to stone.

A Mind Control Device changes the mood of a violent enemy into a happy friend - the perfect peaceful solution. Or, simply shrinking an enemy down will do the trick, as will putting them to sleep with a Tranquilizer Gun.

And finally, the Necronomicon, or Book of the Dead, turns enemies into skeletons!

Stationary Weapons List

  • Cannon
  • Catapult
  • Harpoon
  • Human Cannon
  • Howitzer
  • Turret

Stationary weapons such as the Cannon and Harpoon offer infinite ammo, making them excellent tools of destruction while retaining a low object count. Unfortunately though, they cannot be aimed - each shot is fired in a specific path. However, by moving the weapon to different locations, the player can take out multiple targets with only one object.

The Harpoon shoots through walls - great for taking out enemies from afar, but bad when the harpoon accidentally hits a friendly target. And the Turret needs Maxwell to pilot it in order to fire.

The Human Cannon fires a clown. Useful? As a weapon perhaps not, but as bait on the other hand...

Explosive Weapons List

  • Barrel Gun
  • Bazooka
  • Bomb
  • Depth Charge
  • Dynamite
  • Fireworks
  • Mine
  • Nuke
  • RPG
  • Time Bomb

The most powerful of all the weapons are, no surprise, also the most dangerous to both Maxwell and friendly targets. Some explosives, such as Bomb, Fireworks, and Dynamite, must be lit with a match (or any other source of fire) before exploding. The Time Bomb simply explodes a few seconds after activating, and the Mine explodes when stepped on. The Depth Charge must be placed in water, and must sink to a certain level before exploding.

For long range explosives, the Barrel Gun literally launches exploding barrels at an enemy, certainly one of the most unique and satisfying tools of destruction in Scribblenauts. The RPG also works well, but it's difficult to deny the Barrel Gun's charm.

And the Nuke is just a great way to end it all.

Dropping Weapons

  • Fireball
  • Magic (Dark, Electric, Green, Red)
  • Virus

Dropping Weapons must be spawned and then dropped on the enemy. Fireball and Red Magic kills enemies, Dark Magic turns them into skeleton warriors, Green Magic into frogs, and Electric Magic Electrifies.

A Virus incapacitates enemies for a peaceful solution.
