Spore Expands with Galactic Adventures

Second Expansion Pack Due for Release in March

Electronic Arts' Maxis development shop has announced the second expansion for Will Wright's evolutionary game, Spore.

Titled Galactic Adventures, the new expansion pack aims to beef up the space stage of the original game by allowing players to explore the surface of other planets outside their space vehicles.

“In Spore, players explored the cosmos, but they were always confined to their starships,” said Maxis Senior Vice President and General Manager Lucy Bradshaw in an official video.

“Now, with Galactic Adventures, their creatures can beam right down to the planets and play a variety of adventures.”

Bradshaw also said the expansion was a culmination of effort between both the space team and the creature team from the original game. These two teams listened to what players were saying about the game and tried to expand upon favorite elements to make them more fun.

New Features

Besides offering a slew of new things for players to do in their existing space games, Galactic Adventures also offers quick play missions.

These missions enable players to jump right in and play as space-faring races without needing to start the evolutionary ladder from the very beginning.

The quick play missions have a variety of goals and gameplay types. Collection missions task players with finding and capturing a certain number of a certain species, while attack missions require players to blast a rival civilization.

Some missions also task players with first creating the perfect creature to meet the missions objectives.

In addition to the quick play missions and expanded space game, Galactic Adventures also adds 32 new accessories and abilities to creatures, including inspiring song, summon swarm and even a jet pack.

Perhaps the most impressive new feature of the expansion is the Adventure Editor, which enables players to create their own quick play missions.

Featuring the drag-and-drop style of the editors from the original game, the Adventure Editor is designed to let players quickly and easily create challenging levels and stories, which can then be uploaded to the official Spore site.

Online Creations

According to the development team, the Spore site already houses more than 61 million creations that any player can browse and download into their own games.

Anything the player creates in the game can be uploaded to the site, including creatures, buildings and vehicles.

With the ability to upload new user-created adventures, the site will be expanding with leaderboards, high scores and rankings of the most-played adventures.

About Spore

Spore was the highly anticipated follow-up to Maxis and legendary game designer Will Wright’s The Sims franchise. Spore was in development for a number of years before finally being released in the fall of 2008 for the PC and Mac platforms.

An iPhone and DS game were also released, but neither of those titles featured the depth of the computer game.
